Open Mic Night

Tuesday, December 11 from 6-8 PM

Read it, speak it, and own it at Pleasant Hills Public Library’s second Open Mic Night for Writers. 
Come with a short piece or poem (maximum of 5 minutes in length) to share with an audience.  
Or simply join us just to listen to works that may be meeting others’ ears for the first time.

Light refreshments will be provided. Please register if presenting

New Movies at Noon

Fridays at Noon in the Library program room 
Join us as we show a newer release DVD.  Bring your own bagged lunch to eat during the movie. 
We'll provide the drinks and popcorn.

  Slow Flow Yoga With Miss Tammy

 Saturday, December  22 @ 11 AM

This very welcoming and positive 60 minute class will introduce you to the common poses practiced in yoga. All Levels Welcome! Dress comfortably and bring a yoga mat.
 $5 per class - Registration is necessary due to limited space.
Classes will begin again in 2019 (check back later for exact dates)



Holiday Music in the Library


Thursday, December 20 from 2-3 PM 
Come in from the cold and enjoy some holiday favorites performed by the Ukulele Club, along with free refreshments and a hot beverage bar. 

This free concert will be held in the library program room. 
All ages welcome!

International Cooking Contest 

Wednesday November 7 from 7-8 PM in the Program Room

Do you love to make your grandmother's perfect pierogies or the family's famous falafel recipe?

If so, prepare you best cultural specialties that show off your heritage and cooking creativity and enter our International Cooking Contest!

Registration Required.

Open to all ages and experience levels.

Bring your family and friends to sample free food!

Please be sure to read the contest rules:

  • Upon registration, please list what prepared dish you will be bringing. 
  • All food entries should be made at home, by the participant (if it’s a group effort, please register as such). 
  • All entries should be fully prepared and ready to serve upon arrival to the library. Please label what the dish is and have the creative description to display and copies of the recipe with it. 
  • All participants are responsible for providing their own serving utensils and paper products (library will provide eating utensils). 
  • Plugs are available in the program room for hot plates and crock pots if needed to keep food warm during the tasting. Just let the organizer know if you need to have access to electricity. 
  • There should be enough servings for at least 12 people to taste and judge each food entry. 
  • Judging will be on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest score in each category. 
  • The judging categories are Appearance (which should be determined before tastings begin), Aroma (is the smell appealing, does it add to the desire of wanting to taste it), Uniqueness (based on the creative description of why you chose the dish combined with what the actual dish is), and Taste. 
  • Score cards will be provided for each attendee who wishes to participate in judging the food. The cards will then be collected and added up after each dish is tasted and scored. 
  • The dish with the highest overall score is the winner. Second and third place will be calculated and awarded as well.  
Disclaimer: Organizer reserves the right to modify judging methodology based on the number of participants. This includes suggested serving size per taster and organization of how tastings occur.

 * New Movies at Noon: Select Fridays @ Noon
Bring your own lunch and join us in the program room for a showing of a newer release DVD. Movie will start right at noon.  Popcorn and drinks will be provided.

*Beekeeping with John Crist: Tuesday,  October 23 from 6:30-8p.m. Join us as we welcome guest speaker, John Crist, for an exciting introduction to beekeeping! Come and learn about hives, beekeeping tools, why we need bees, and what it means to be a beekeeper, plus complimentary honey sampling.

                                              This program is free and intended for adults and teens.                                                Honey will be avaiable for purchase after the presentation.

* Annual Wine Tasting Fundaiser - Saturday, November 10 from 7-9:30 PM

"A Night Of Royal Revelry" 
Enjoy Wine, Mead and Cider samplings from KingView Mead (located in Pleasant Hills, Pa), along with appetizers, desserts, live music, Chinese auction and more!
Tickets are $30 each ($40 at the door), available to purchase  in the library or online:

September is LOVE YOUR LIBRARY month! Thanks to the generous support of the Jack Buncher Foundation, donations made to PLEASANT HILLS PUBLIC LIBRARY throughout the month of September will be MATCHED! This September, libraries across Allegheny County are inviting residents to participate in a special fundraising collaboration to show their Library some LOVE by supporting and investing in their libraries.

Pleasant Hills Community Day 
Look for our Wizard of Oz themed float in the parade, and be sure to visit our booth at the festival in Mowry Park!

The Scribe Sanctuary - Special Author Visit
Join the Scribe Sanctuary (A Creative Writers Group) for a special event they have arranged to welcome special guest, Tara Bailey.  Tara is a published author and also Chief Executive Officer of Bailey Publishing House, located in Pittsburgh, Pa. Bagels and Book Thyme 
A new, monthly book club held at Fresh Thyme Farmers Market Cafe, in Southland Shopping Center.  This months book selection: A Mutant Message Down Under by Marlo Morgan.This book takes us to the Australian Outback, for a fictional account of an American woman's spiritual odyssey through outback of Australia. A few copies will be available at the front desk of the Pleasant Hills Library for anyone who wants to participate.

Programs, Events and News for Adults!


Adult Summer Reading Challenge 



 If you haven't registered yet, it's not too late! There are still about 6 weeks to join in the fun.  Stop by the front desk to sign up and receive all the information you need to start earning those raffle tickets.  There's a different gift basket raffled off every week, with the winner being randomly picked each Friday through August 10th!  All the prizes are on display at the library, so come on in and see for yourself what all is being raffled off during the Summer Reading Challenge!

Upcoming Special Events and Programs

The Butterfly Project with the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh - Monday, July 9th @ 2p.m. Please Register. Join the initiative to paint a ceramic butterfly to represent one of the 1.5 million children killed during the Holocaust. Program recommended for ages 7 - adult.

PiYo with Melissa Jusko - combines pilates and yoga for a mind/body workout. Classes being held Saturdays, July 14th and 28th, $5 a class and registration required due to space in the program room. 


  Maker Monday - this months craft is a mosaic flower pot made with recycled CD's. Monday July 16th, at 10:30 a.m., registration required for supplies.  $5 donation being collected at the start of the program.

Kindness ROCKS - Monday, July 16 @ 3p.m. Open to all Ages, $1 donation per person.  Come to the library and paint your own kindess rock! Registration Required.

Evening Book Discussion - Monday July 16th @ 7p.m. Something new this month!  Choose which memoir to read OR read both!

Music on the Lawn & Music Swap - both events planned for Tuesday, July 17th @ 6:30 p.m.  Local musician, Micah Nagel, along with a few other contributing musicians, will be performing live for a second performance on the library lawn!  Don't miss out this time - it's a fun night filled with lots of great family friendly tunes we all know and enjoy. Also, bring your CD's and Vinyl Records to swap with others who appreciate good music as much as you!  No registration required; All Ages Welcome!

Extracting Health From Nature: Essential Oils Talk with Jen Wittkopp - Tuesday, July 24th @ 6:30p.m. Topics will include essential oil history, safety, uses for children and pets, cooking, and more! You don't need to be an aromatherapist to use essential oils in your home. Registration Requested

Musical Movie Matinees - Select Fridays @ 10:15 a.m. July 13th- "That Thing You Do" (PG), July 27th - "Into the Woods" (PG).  Light refreshments will be provided.  


Book Talks with Dr. Aupperle - Friday, July 20th at 10:30 a.m. in the Pleasant Hills Library program room.  This month's selection will be Fascism: A Warning by Madeline Albright.
